Dying Better in America

Bill Novelli, C-TAC Co-Chair & Georgetown University McDonough School of Business Professor, gives a spirited TEDx Georgetown talk on an idea certainly worth spreading!

“There is a saying among Gerontologists: ‘People should all live to a ripe old age, well into our 90s, and then have it end with a quick bullet fired by a jealous lover’ – But that’s not the way most people go into the great beyond. For many people dying in this country is isolating, painful, and costly.”  - Bill Novelli

On December 11th, 2013, a panel of distinguished professionals whose expertise includes but is not limited to social change champion, justice and peace scholar and global development leader gathered for a three series presentation event.  Each session was titled according to the topic speakers were prepared to address; Session 1. Global Human Development, Session 2. The Whole Person, and Session 3. The Others.

Using the power of narrative, Bill kicked of Session 2. The Whole Person. He articulated the challenges facing the current healthcare system as our country experiences rapid growth in the aging population and number of individuals living with advanced illness.  The presentation offers real-life stories, key statistics, and potential initiatives to educate, empower and transform perspectives ensuring best practices are shared among health professionals, policymakers, employers, patients, caregivers, and community leaders.

“This is about giving people the care they want, the care they expect, the care they deserve, that squares with their norms and values and that is patient and family centered.”
