Conference Description:
From our first words to our last, many of our conversations are about our family. We talk about good times and bad. A few of those conversations stick with us; some are heartwarming, some are painful. Far too often, families who can dive right into discussions over money, religion and politics are stymied when someone brings up a topic we all need to consider. Regardless of age, ethnicity, religion and means, no plan is simply not a plan. What is important to us at the end of life? Facing a serious illness, what do we want, and don’t want in our final months, weeks or hours of life? What are we worried about? Who will decide for us if we cannot?
The national conversation and advocacy for advance care planning – the process where individuals clarify, discuss and share their healthcare decisions for the last phase of life – is essential as our country transitions to a patient-centered healthcare system.
Substantive policy discussions on advance care planning have been on hold for several years and 2013 provides us with a new opportunity to set politics aside and have an honest and robust public dialogue on decision-making in the last months of life and the often missed opportunity for family-centered advance care planning.
